In the winter of 1986 at the age of 22, I began to build the first Henchcraft. After attending a Micro Sprint race in the fall of that year with classmate Mark Richard I decided to build a frame and utilize some Sprint Car technology that had not yet been introduced to the small car racing divisions. Until that point my whole life had been about Sprint Car racing. You see, lucky for me, I was the son of the greatest sprint car mechanic and small block engine builder of the 70's and 80's. With my father's influence, and a bit of his determination I set out to build a chassis. My degree in Mechanical Engineering came in handy during the design stage. However when it came to the manufacturing stage I was faced with a new challenge. I had no tubing bender and no tig welder, two key pieces of equipment needed to build a chassis. With detail drawings in hand and a truckload of 4130 tubing I was off to visit long time racing friend Randy Wolfe. Randy had a bender at his race shop and when I told him what I was interested in doing he was more than willing to help me get started. More to come...
